Coal Preparation and Pulverization

Before combustion, coal needs to be prepared and processed. At the power station, coal is crushed into a fine powder using pulverizers. Pulverizing coal increases its surface area, allowing it to burn more efficiently and completely. This fine coal dust is then blown into the boiler furnace for combustion.

Combustion in the Boiler

The heart of a coal power station is the boiler, where coal combustion occurs. The pulverized coal is mixed with hot air and burned at high temperatures inside the boiler furnace. This combustion releases heat energy, which converts water contained in boiler tubes into steam. The design of the boiler ensures maximum heat transfer and efficient burning of coal.

Steam Generation

As the water in the boiler tubes heats up, it turns into high-pressure steam. This steam is crucial for driving the turbines. The pressure and temperature of the steam can reach hundreds of atmospheres and degrees Celsius, enabling it to hold significant energy. Efficient steam generation is vital for overall plant efficiency.

Turbine Operation

The high-pressure steam generated in the boiler is directed onto the blades of a steam turbine. The force of the steam spins the turbine blades, converting thermal energy into mechanical energy. The turbine is connected to a generator, and as it spins, it drives the generator to produce electricity.

Electricity Generation

The turbine’s mechanical energy is transferred to the generator, which consists of magnets and coils of wire. As the turbine spins the generator’s rotor, it creates a rotating magnetic field that induces an electric current in the stator coils. This process converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, which is then transmitted to the power grid.

Steam Condensation and Recycling

After passing through the turbine, the steam loses pressure and temperature and enters a condenser. In the condenser, the steam is cooled by water (often from a river, lake, or cooling tower) and converted back into liquid water. This condensate is then pumped back to the boiler to be reheated, creating a closed-loop system that conserves water and energy.

Emission Control and Environmental Measures

Coal combustion produces emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter. Modern coal power stations employ various emission control technologies including electrostatic precipitators, scrubbers, and selective catalytic reduction systems to reduce pollutants. Additionally, ash produced from burning coal is collected and managed to minimize environmental impact.

Ash Handling and Disposal

The burning of coal generates ash, which is separated into fly ash and bottom ash. Fly ash is captured by filters and electrostatic precipitators, while bottom ash collects at the bottom of the boiler. Both types of ash are handled carefully, often recycled for use in construction materials or safely disposed of in landfills.

Coal power stations operate through a complex but well-established process that transforms coal’s chemical energy into electrical energy.
